Kids Patch lists 113 Santa experiences for Christmas 2026: 92 across 24 counties in the Republic and 21 in Northern Ireland. They range from shopping-centre grottos to steam trains, farms, castles and hotel breakfasts. We went through every listing to work out when they open, what a visit really costs, and how to pick the right one for your family.
The short version
- Most open in late November. 62 of the 99 experiences that have published dates open in November. The busiest weekend is 27–29 November, when 35 of them open.
- A typical child ticket is about €28. Of the 61 experiences in the Republic that give a price per child, 16 cost under €20 and only 2 cost €40 or more.
- Adults usually pay too. Of the 88 listings with price details, at least 54 charge for adults as well, and 31 add a booking fee. Many also charge for babies.
- There are cheaper and free options. Several grottos cost €12–15 a child, some trains are cheaper on weekdays, and one hotel is planning a free Santa Sunday.
- 25 experiences offer sensory-friendly sessions, usually with quieter visits, smaller groups and dimmed lights or music.
When Santa experiences open
The first Santa experience of the season opens on 5 November: Rushmere's Ski Lift to Santa's Mountain Grotto in Craigavon. In the Republic, the earliest are The Christmas Express at Mount Druid in Westmeath and the Santa Train at Amber Springs Hotel in Gorey, both from 13 November.
Most of the bigger venues open on the last weekend in November. 37 open in December, including most of the hotel lunches and breakfasts, which usually run on a few weekends only. Some run for one day: the Santa Spectacular in Castlecomer is on 6 December only.
Many experiences run on weekends only, or open on weekdays only in the last week or two before Christmas. Check the dates on each listing before you plan around a particular day.
What a Santa visit costs
These are the lowest child prices each venue publishes, taken from the 61 listings in the Republic that give a price per child:
| Child ticket | Experiences |
|---|---|
| Under €20 | 16 |
| €20 to €29.99 | 25 |
| €30 to €39.99 | 18 |
| €40 or more | 2 |
The middle price is €28. At the top end are Santa's Grotto at Bunratty Castle & Folk Park (€40 a child) and Santa's Workshop at Aillwee (€48 a child). Both include a lot more than the visit with Santa. At Bunratty, the ticket also covers Bunratty in Lights, a train ride, shows and amusement rides. At Aillwee, it includes a VR adventure and a birds of prey display.
In Northern Ireland, child tickets range from £10 to £35.
The child price isn't the whole cost
The child price is the one in the headline, but it's rarely the full bill:
- Adults pay at most venues. Adult tickets are usually €7 to €25. At Airfield Estate, for example, children are €32.50 and adults are €22.50.
- Babies are often charged. Under-1s are free at some venues but cost €5 to €15 at many others, usually because they get a present too.
- Booking fees of €1 to €5 a booking are common.
- Prices change by date. At Elf Town Dublin, a child ticket costs between €29 and €42, depending on the date. The weekends in late November and mid-December are the dearest.
- Photos are often extra.
For a family of two adults and two children, a mid-priced experience usually works out at €90 to €110 once adult tickets and fees are added.
Some venues price per family instead. At Siamsa Tíre in Tralee, two adults and two children pay €54 in total. Santa's Grotto Donegal in Carndonagh costs €35 a family, including a printed family photo.
How to spend less
- Choose a smaller grotto. Santa's Magical Cabin runs in six places: the Ilac Centre and Kilnamanagh in Dublin, Cork, Jetland in Limerick, Portlaoise and Ennis. Children are €15, including a present, and adults are €7, plus a booking fee. The Santa's Grotto at Quayside Shopping Centre in Sligo is €12 a child, and adults go free.
- Go on a weekday or off-peak date. On the Santa Express at the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway, child tickets cost €25 on most days and €20 on the two Wednesday dates. At Nollaig at Elizabeth Fort in Cork, child tickets drop from €33.50 to €29.50 on off-peak dates.
- Look for a show ticket. At the Santa Spectacular in Castlecomer, €15 a person covers a stage show and a visit to Santa.
- Check for free events. The Springfield Hotel in Leixlip is planning a free Santa Sunday on 6 December, but hasn't published times or booking details yet. Local community and town Christmas events often include a free visit from Santa too.
Choosing the right experience
Santa trains
17 experiences include a train ride, from heritage railways to woodland trains. They include the Birr Castle Christmas Express, the Santa Train at Stradbally Woodland Railway, the Santa Train at Rathwood and Christmas at Luggwoods. In Northern Ireland there are the Lapland Express in Downpatrick and the steam train at Whitehead Railway Museum. See them all on our Santa trains page.
A full day out
Some venues combine Santa with a bigger day out, so the higher price covers more than the grotto. Examples are Jingle Fest at Emerald Park, Christmas Island at Hidden Valley, Winter Wonderland at Westport Estate and Santa on the Island at Waterford Castle, where you take a ferry to the island.
Lunch or breakfast with Santa
13 hotels and venues combine a meal with a visit from Santa, which suits families who want to make an occasion of it. Examples include Santa by the Sea at the Shoreline Hotel in Donabate, Lunch with Santa at the Lough Rea Hotel, Santa Sundays at the Hillgrove Hotel and Breakfast with Santa at the Talbot Hotel Carlow. Many of these run on two or three dates only.
Real reindeer
A few experiences have live reindeer, including Elf Town Dublin, Airfield Estate, Rathwood and Santa's Cottage in Hilltown, County Down. Many others give children reindeer food to take home.
Sensory-friendly sessions
25 experiences offer sensory-friendly or quiet sessions for autistic children and others who find crowds and noise hard. The Sensory Santa at South Tipperary Arts Centre in Clonmel is built entirely around it: each family books its own short, quiet visit. These sessions usually have far fewer places, so they're worth booking early.

How we put this together
Every date and price above comes from a Kids Patch listing. We took each one from the organiser's own website or booking page between September and October 2026. Where a venue has several prices, we quote the lowest child price. Prices and dates can change, and popular slots sell out, so check with the organiser before you book.
