About Dublin Zoo
Set inside Phoenix Park, Dublin Zoo is home to more than 400 animals across roughly 70 species and has been a fixture of family days out in the capital for generations. Children can follow trails through African Plains to watch Asian lions, giraffes and rhinos, cross into the Asian forest habitats to spot orangutans and Asian elephants, and get close to sea lions and Humboldt penguins. Recent arrivals include giant anteaters, armadillos and eastern bongos, alongside long-standing residents like the zoo's gorillas and chimpanzees. As a conservation charity run by the Zoological Society of Ireland, the zoo weaves breeding programmes and wildlife protection messaging throughout the visit without it feeling like a lecture. Food outlets and a gift shop are dotted around the grounds, picnicking is welcome, and the whole site is designed to be walked at a toddler's pace or covered briskly in a couple of hours. With gates open daily year-round and easy access from the city centre, it remains one of the most reliable rainy-or-shiny outings for Dublin families, school tours and visiting grandparents alike.
