About The Irish National Heritage Park
This 35-acre open-air museum near Wexford town takes children on a walk through 9,000 years of Irish history, from Mesolithic hunter-gatherer camps to a Viking shipyard and a Norman motte-and-bailey castle. Sixteen full-scale reconstructed sites let kids step inside a crannóg, a ringfort and early Christian monastic buildings rather than just reading about them, and guided tours (included with admission) bring the different eras to life along woodland trails beside the River Slaney. Live demonstrations, including falconry displays, add an extra hands-on element that younger visitors especially enjoy. The riverside visitor centre houses a café and restaurant with outdoor seating, useful for refuelling mid-walk, and the largely flat, path-based layout makes it manageable for buggies and younger legs over a couple of hours. School groups are well catered for with dedicated educational programmes tied to the curriculum. Because the whole site is outdoors and involves a fair bit of walking between reconstructions, it works best on a dry day, but it's a rare chance for kids to physically walk through the sweep of Irish history in one visit rather than seeing it behind glass.
