Kilkenny Castle
About Kilkenny Castle
Few Irish castles have been continuously occupied for as long as Kilkenny Castle, a Norman stronghold largely remodelled in Victorian times and now managed by the OPW as one of the country's most visited heritage sites. Inside, self-guided and guided tours take in restored state rooms and the Long Gallery, with an audio guide available for families who want to explore at their own pace. The real draw for kids, though, is often outside: fifty acres of rolling parkland with mature trees, a lake, and a formal terraced rose garden to wander through, plus several orienteering trails that turn a castle visit into a proper outdoor adventure. There's a playground on the grounds for younger children to burn off energy, and the parks and gardens themselves are free to enter year-round, separate from the ticketed castle interior. A tearoom on site serves light refreshments, and most of the castle and grounds are wheelchair accessible. Current exhibitions rotate regularly, with a networks-themed exhibition running recently. Whether it's a quick walk through the gardens or a full guided tour of the castle, Kilkenny Castle anchors a day out in one of Ireland's best-preserved medieval cities.
