About Exploris Aquarium
Exploris is Northern Ireland's only aquarium and seal sanctuary, set on the shores of Strangford Lough in the small harbour town of Portaferry, about an hour from Belfast. First opened in 1987 and substantially reopened in 2016, it has since welcomed over a million visitors. The centrepiece is a 250,000 litre Ocean Tank surrounded by coral reef displays with more than 100 tropical species, alongside a dedicated seal sanctuary, an otter habitat and a Reptiles of the Rainforest exhibit that includes a crocodile. A newer Under the Sea Experience adds to the trail of tanks. Families can extend the visit with a stop at the Kraken Bar & Grill, a licensed restaurant serving hot food from late morning, or browse the on-site gift shop. Quiet sessions run for the first hour each morning for visitors who prefer a calmer environment. Beyond general admission, Exploris runs premium add-ons such as behind-the-scenes seal experiences and an Aquarist for a Day programme, plus seal adoption schemes and school education packages. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the visit.
