About Belfast Zoo
Belfast Zoo climbs the slopes of Cavehill overlooking the city and Belfast Lough, giving its 55 acres of grounds dramatic views to go with around 500 animals from roughly 100 species. Run by Belfast City Council, the zoo puts conservation and breeding programmes at the centre of its work, including its involvement in cheetah breeding alongside Fota Wildlife Park. Families can pick up a free audio tour to learn the zoo's history as they wander between mammal, bird, reptile and invertebrate habitats, hop on the Zoo Express for a scenic ride between areas, and stop at dedicated photo spots along the way. Younger children have playgrounds to burn off energy, while the Treetop Tearoom and a Zoovenir shop cover food and souvenirs. Accessibility has clearly been considered, with a Zoomobile, wheelchairs and scooters for hire, changing places facilities and 17 designated accessible parking bays. Beyond a standard visit, the zoo runs school and education visits, group bookings, birthday parties and even "Roar and Snore" overnight stays for a more immersive experience. Hours shorten in winter, so it is worth checking before a visit outside peak season.
